This is an area near Breezwood PA that is about 13 miles with 3 tunnels which use to be part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike but this stretch was bypassed in 1968. This area was given to the Southern Alleghenies Conservancy which is ran by PIKE2Bike. The intentions were to convert it to a bike trail but at this point 20 plus years later this has not come to fruition. It seems to be in an unkept state with signs that basically tell that you can use it at your own risk and that’s what my dogs, and I have done on a handful of occasions over the years.
It is actually quite eerie there and not for the faint of heart. The asphalt is in rough shape so as we MUSH this area we have to be very careful and use the grass shoulders and center area to run on when possible. In addition none of the tunnels or area for that matter are lit up so while the tunnels are not super long they are long enough that no matter what time of day you are there you'll need a flashlight inside the tunnels. The tunnels are also marked up with what appears to be years of graffiti.
The tunnels for me are the most interesting aspect and the lure that keep me visiting this area. It's like going back in time and imaging being on the highway of a ghost town kind of area and as you get to the tunnels you are like WOW! Some of the tunnels have inside areas with stairs to the top which appears to have be offices that were just abandoned. Of course this area is ripe for our Ghost Hunting Paranormal Investigations which we have done on a few occasions.
We also have flown my AirWOOF1 Drone there for some really cool reconnaissance to further checkout the lay of the land. I don’t think anyone to date has done this or at least if they did they haven’t shared the footage The dogs always have a wonderful time here and it can be quite enchanting and spooky! The biggest issue we've had there is the trail access is blocked by concrete walls that make it hard to get my wider Dog Sleds On Wheels through but my support team and I always make it happen! It is however wide enough for a person and regular bike to get through!
